Memories
Richard Roberts
Mr. Samber was an extraordinary role model for so many of us as youngsters growing up on 145th Street.  He looked after us just as if we were his own offspring.  He believed in helping to keep our minds and bodies challenged.  We piled into his blue 1949 Ford sedan or later his green 1961 Ford Galaxie and he would take us to the roller skating rink for some good spins around the floor.  Mr. Samber led by example, too, as he was a skilled and suave skater.  If Billy or one of us got a new science kit, Mr. Samber would give us science tips and tricks to stoke our interest. He and Mrs. Samber regularly welcomed us all into their home and to their outdoor backyard pool.  I wondered how they put up with the constant swarm that was always coming by.  His outgoing warmth and his commitment to bettering the lot of African Americans was infectious, and we are all the better for it.  I count as a blessing having been his neighbor.

As God directs the flight of the sparrow he so directs our paths February 1957 Mrs. Mary Taylor (my mother) Harold & Elizabeth Hubbard, Bill, Fanny, Joyce and Billy Samber was joined together as one family through the years on a daily basis.  We have shared our joys and sorrows always there for each other.  No doubt God and family concern was first in his life and he was a good neighbor and friend to his brothers and sisters in Christ.  We loved Bill but, GOD loved him best forever.
